Nutrition counselling provides you with information you need to meet your pet’s nutrition needs. The goal is to examine your pet’s current diet and make suggestions to improve any gaps or shortfalls. Our veterinary team will answer any questions about your pet’s nutrition and provide you with the tools you need to maintain their wellbeing.
What happens during nutrition counselling?
During your pet’s appointment, we’ll ask questions about their feeding schedule, eating habits and the types of food they eat. Be sure to have the brands of any of the foods you feed them handy so we can provide insights about them. It can be challenging to read pet food labels and decide what ingredients are best for your pet. Based on the information you provide and their individual needs, we’ll make recommendations on what you should be incorporating into your pet’s diet. This could include formulating special diets or reducing their daily calorie intake. To book a nutrition counselling appointment, please contact us at 519-941-6383.
What are some healthy foods I should feed my pet?
Food recommendations are specific to your pet’s dietary needs, taking into account things like food allergies and nutrients they need the most. Complete or balanced foods are rich with carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. When reading food labels, remember that ingredients are listed in descending order. You should look out for the following ingredients closer to the top of the list:
- Meat, like chicken, beef or fish
- Carbohydrates like rice, oats or barley
- Vegetables such as sweet potatoes or peas
- Fruits like blueberries or apples
- Fats like fish oil or olive oil
